Judge: $2 Million Bail for Each of Gregory Holder's Alleged Killers

Two men who allegedly murdered a Cherry Hill man last month received seven-figure bails Tuesday, a day after they were formally charged.

Michael Winters, 37, and Andrew Alford, 39, both of Camden, were each slapped with $2 million full cash bail by Superior Court Judge Irvin Snyder, which covers both the murder charges and unrelated charges against each man, and will remain in the Camden County Jail.

They’re accused of killing Cherry Hill resident Gregory Holder, who was found bleeding from the head at the corner of Broadway and Berkley Street in Camden on Nov. 2, and eventually died of what the county medical examiner ruled was blunt-force head trauma.

The two men were allegedly spotted on surveillance videos, first assaulting and robbing Holder, then later arguing about the money they grabbed in the robbery, according to Assistant Prosecutor Christopher St. John, and were also identified by a witness familiar with both men.

In separate arraignments, St. John characterized the two men as career criminals—Winters had 36 arrests on his record, St. John said, and Alford had been convicted on various charges, from drug possession up to robbery in an “increasing pattern of violence.”

Both men face other charges in unrelated incidents—Alford for robbery, and Winters for kidnapping and robbery, in what Snyder said appeared to be a carjacking in Camden that took place after Holder’s murder.

Alford, in a dark blue jail jumpsuit and a scruffy beard, stared blankly as the prosecutor rattled off his prior record. At one point, he told the judge he wanted to say something, but didn’t speak again after being advised of his rights against self-incrimination.

While Alford had only had $75,000 bail set on his unrelated robbery charge, Snyder said the strength of the case against him and the fact that Alford is homeless justified the extreme bail, which was set at full cash.

“You’re an enormous flight risk,” Snyder told Alford.

Winters, likewise, was almost entirely silent during his arraignment, shaking his head as St. John detailed the alleged details of the murder, and only responding, “Yes, sir,” to several questions from the judge.

Like his co-defendant, Winters’ bail was set at full cash. Both men were instructed not to have any contact with the Holder’s family, who watched from the gallery during the proceeding and didn’t speak either during or after the arraignments.

Holder’s murder was the 58th of the year in Camden, which tied the city’s all-time record—a mark that’s been surpassed in the weeks since his death.
