Cherry Hill will honor three township residents who paid the ultimate price in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan when township officials rededicate the war memorial on its 50th anniversary on Memorial Day Monday. Marine Lt. Col. John Spahr and Army Capt. Gregory Dalessio, who were both killed in Iraq, and Marine Lance Cpl. Jeremy Kane, who died in Afghanistan, will all be honored, and their families acknowledged in the Memorial Day ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m. at the municipal complex on Mercer Street. The commander of Fort Dix, Col. Jeffrey Doll, will deliver the keynote address at the rededication, and veterans and active-duty military personnel will be recognized as part of the program. Customers will be moved to other nearby branches, bank officials said.
Sun National Bank customers in Cherry Hill will have a few more miles to drive this summer. The bank’s branch on Brace Road is one of three slated to close in July, along with branches in Lawrenceville and Mystic Island, bank officials said. “Sun made a business decision to dedicate the resources of those branches to other locations after analyzing customer markets and growth patterns in the state,” spokeswoman Heather Newcomb Hardwick said in a statement. “This will enhance our ability to streamline operations in the branch network and continue to provide excellent customer service.” Customers at the Brace Road branch will be shifted to other nearby Sun banks, including those in Collingswood, Maple Shade and Marlton, Hardwick said.
DEP Commissioner: side scan sonar used to detect sunken debris; Tourism Commissioner: rental market is healthy
Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of …

Cherry Hill East outside hitters Nick DiVito and Gary Hettinger came up big for the Cougars in the quarterfinals of the South Jersey tournament, combining for 26 points to help East get by cross-town rival Cherry Hill West in straight sets Thursday. Hettinger had the biggest afternoon, driving 12 kills, coming up with two aces and twice scoring blocks against West, but DiVito, one of the top outside hitters in the state, wasn’t far back in the stats column, dropping 10 kills against West. Austin Billig came up with five digs and Liam McIntyre put up 21 assists. No. 5 East won the first set handily, 25-15, then followed that with a 25-19 victory in the second to take the match. Utility crews have been called in, but drivers should avoid the area.
Haddonfield-Berlin Road was partially shut down around 5:15 p.m. Thursday, after a tree crashed down on wires near Downs Farm Swim Club. The road was essentially closed between Burnt Mill and Evesham Roads, Cherry Hill Police said, though one lane of traffic was still squeezing by on the eastbound side. PSE&G crews had been called in to handle the tree and wires, but police said drivers should avoid the area if at all possible and seek alternate routes. There was no timeline yet for the road reopening.

Nationwide, gas prices are predicted to be lower this summer compared to the past three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 will probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …
Some new measures go into effect the day after Memorial Day.
Dropping off that forgotten lunch or a student from an early-morning dentist’s appointment won’t be the same at Cherry Hill schools starting next week. In the first of a wave of new security measures, the district is changing how parents will be able to access all 19 public schools in the township, following a school security assessment, school officials announced. The biggest change is coming in drop-offs—whether for students or stuff—but it also includes new restrictions on how many adults can attend classroom events and other policy shifts. “We are not going to allow parents past the main office,” Superintendent Maureen Reusche told the Zone PTA earlier this month in a video released Wednesday. “In some buildings, that's not a change at…

Plans are already under way to get the course back up and running—and soon.
It may not be long before golfers return to the fairways and greens at the former Woodcrest Country Club. A reopening under The Village at Woodcrest name could happen within just a few weeks, according to one of the principals in the development group that purchased the club for $10.1 million at auction this week. A reunion-reopening tournament could go off some time during the week of June 3, and the former club’s superintendent, Patrick Lucas, and head golf professional, Bill Torlucci, have already been hard at work in that regard, reaching out to former members to coordinate the event, according to Matthew Haydinger, who runs First Montgomery Group along with his brothers, Richard III and Michael, and father, Richard Jr. Meanwhile, they…
