Cherry Hill Resident Helps Team New Jersey Win Soccer Gold at Special Olympics

Peter Poole helped the men's soccer team win Gold on Friday.

With a Cherry Hill resident on the roster, Team New Jersey captured the Gold Medal in the 5-on-5 Traditional Men’s Soccer competition during the Special Olympics New Jersey on Friday.

Team New Jersey topped Team Texas, 5-1, in the final on Friday.

Cherry Hill resident Peter Poole scored the winning goal in a double overtime victory over Pennsylvania. It was one of six goals he scored throughout the course of the tournament.

Poole, 22, works for Wegmansas a member of their Helping Hands. He also plays soccer, floor hockey, basketball, softball, and baseball for Special Olympics.

The 10-man roster featured athletes from all over the state, including Mount Laurel resident Ian Murray and Cinnaminson resident Mark Cellini.

The Special Olympics mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

This year's games were played in Mercer County from June 14-20.
