Direct Connection Project to Result in Lanes Closures on I-295, Route 42 Friday Night

I-295 west and Route 42 south will experience closures between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday.

Drivers using two major roadways in southern New Jersey should expect overnight delays as a result of restriping as part of the Direct Connection project.

I-295 westbound and Route 42 southbound will experience overnight lane closures from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday, Camden County officials announced Friday afternoon.

The left lane on I-295 south from the Browning Road overpass to the Creek Road overpass and the ramp from I-295 south to Route 42 south will close for restriping. One lane on I-295 will remain open during the work, officials said.

  • I-295 southbound motorists heading toward Route 42 southbound will be directed to Exit 26 onto I-76 westbound, and then be directed to use the Market Street exit and U-turn onto I-76 eastbound/Route 42 southbound.

The Direct Connection project is a $900 million federally funded project designed to provide a seamless route for I-295 drivers travelling through the interchange. About 250,000 vehicles travel the interchange every day, according to officials.

The project will take place in four phases, and is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2021.

All projects timelines are subject to change depending on the weather. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
