Trees and Trash: What to Do After the Storm

Township officials offer advice, help for homeowners.

Trash pickup and recycling are back on a normal schedule following two days of disruptions, but leaf pickup will be delayed as Cherry Hill recovers from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, township officials said.

Residents who didn't have their trash picked up Monday or Tuesday have the option of using a township Dumpster at the Public Works yard on Perina Boulevard, off Marlkress Road.

Residents will have 24-hour access to the disposal site ahead of getting their normal trash and recycling service next week.

Trees and limbs pose another problem—officials have said four-foot sections up to 50 pounds are OK for curbside pickup, and Mayor Chuck Cahn said he's asked the township's garbage hauler to relax restrictions on branch bundling and yard debris.

Larger limbs and fallen trees are ultimately the homeowner's responsibility, though.

"Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate requests to remove trees or large limbs from private property," Cahn said. "Curbside trees that have fallen into the street will be removed to clear the roadway, but will be left at the curb for the homeowner to discard."
