Power Problems Linger a Week after Sandy

Cherry Hill officials are pushing to have the last 100-plus customers restored by the end of the day Tuesday.

Power woes continued Tuesday, a week after Hurricane Sandy ripped down trees and power lines across Cherry Hill, with at least 151 customers still out of power, according to PSE&G’s latest estimate.

About half of those were scheduled to be restored Tuesday—residents on Park Drive reported crews had made repairs to bring a number of homes back on the grid in the morning, and the utility company indicated work would wrap up by Friday on the last affected customers. Overall, just 0.5 percent of customers in the township were without power as of Tuesday morning.

PSE&G officials said they’ve brought in an extra 600 workers from Pennsylvania to aid in the statewide effort in New Jersey, where there are now 4,600 linemen in the field.

“Our work plan is prioritized by where we can restore the maximum number of customers in the shortest possible time…and is affected by a number of technical considerations including the ability to access roads and equipment,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Cherry Hill officials, meanwhile, said they’re still pushing the utility to wrap up operations as quickly as possible—preferably ahead of schedule.

They’ve asked anyone still without power to report it to the township at 856-488-7878 or via email to MayorCahn@chtownship.com with a name, address and a telephone number where you can be reached.

Meanwhile, the Cherry Hill Library is open as a spot for families to get relief from lingering outages. Both the multicultural room and conference center are open to anyone who needs more space, which can be arranged by speaking with library staff.
