Cherry Hill Preps for Hurricane Sandy's Effects

The township has sandbags available this weekend and is working to reduce flood hazards ahead of the storm.

Cherry Hill is mobilizing for a hit from Hurricane Sandy, with Department of Public Works (DPW) crews scheduled through the weekend to clear debris and help with sandbag distribution all weekend, township officials announced via the township website Friday.

DPW crews were slated to work Friday and Saturday to clear storm drains and remove debris to try to mitigate any flooding from the hurricane, and, along with police and firefighters and Office of Emergency Management (OEM) personnel, are part of a 24-hour response when the storm hits, officials said.

Crews will also be out at the municipal building and at DeCou Park at Evesham and Cropwell roads Saturday and Sunday to help residents with sandbags. Residents with their own sandbags can have them filled starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, and sandbag distribution will take place starting at 6:30 a.m. Sunday and run through 2:30 p.m.

DPW workers will be on hand to help senior citizens and disabled residents with sandbags.

Township officials also recommended residents keep gutters and curb lines clear over the weekend, and bag any uncollected leaves instead of raking them to the curb.

The approaching storm has also caused some cancellations and changes:

  • NJ TRANSIT has canceled work on the Atlantic City line this weekend and will run trains on a normal schedule overnight Sunday and Monday.
  • A county flu shot clinic at the Katz JCC slated for Monday has been canceled and rescheduled for Nov. 5.
  • Official trick-or-treating is still set for Wednesday, and any changes will be posted on the township website and via the township’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.
  • Likewise, trash, recycling and leaf pickup scheduled for Monday and Tuesday are still on as normal, though township officials said the storm may force them to change that schedule.
