Woodcrest Bankruptcy Auction Turns Political

Republicans cite concerns over perceived conflicts of interest and financial implications from the township's move to acquire the club as open space.

The saga of Woodcrest Country Club took a decidedly political turn Monday night, as local Republicans slammed the all-Democratic governing body over perceived conflicts of interest and financial choices, even as council reaffirmed the decision to push for township and county intervention in the bankrupt club’s auction. Three of the four Republican candidates running in November’s election took to the microphone to criticize the township’s involvement in the auction—a move announced on April 3—in trying to preserve the 155-acre golf course as open space, raising blunt concerns over the potential short- and long-term costs, as well as transparency issues with the closed-door auction. “Buying this property could result in increased property …

It appears that the west side is Cherry Hill's own red headed step child. Variances have always been dumped upon us in late night closed door meetings right after "hearing" and then promptly ignoring any public opposition. Not only that, the west side taxpayers are sick and tired of having our side of town suffer neglect. Every single public tennis court on our side's schools is unusable. Our …   more ›

Christie Underwent Weight-Loss Surgery In February

Governor tells New York Post that Lap-Band procedure was done at the urging of his family. An NYU doctor made house calls to Christie's Mendham home to not draw attention to the surgery.

Gov. Chris Christie underwent stomach-shrinking Lap-Band surgery in February, he confirmed to the New York Post on Monday night while refuting speculation that he was slimming down for a White House run in 2016. Christie quietly had the Lap-Band — or laparoscopic adjustable gastric binding —procedure done in a New York hospital, telling the paper that he agreed to the surgery at the urging of his family after turning 50 in September. Sean Conner, a spokesperson for Christie, confirmed the story to Patch Tuesday. The governor insisted that the Lap-Band was not inserted to help him lose weight in the run-up to 2016. "I know it sounds crazy to say that running for president is minor, but in the grand scheme of things, it was looking at Mary …

Vacant Property Ordinance Will Crack Down on Violations, Officials Say

Cherry Hill's township council takes the first step to forcing greater accountability on the owners of nearly 150 vacant properties in the township.

Calling it a solution to a quality-of-life problem in neighborhoods across Cherry Hill, township officials introduced an ordinance Monday night designed to strengthen enforcement powers on vacant and abandoned properties. Aimed at the absent owners of derelict residential properties—primarily banks—the ordinance mandates a fee-based registration for vacant homes, defined as unoccupied properties not actively on the real estate market that would need work before being reoccupied, and provides for daily penalties for property owners that don’t comply. The township is making the move for multiple reasons, including greater accountability for vacant property owners—the ordinance requires them to provide a local contact—and to recoup some of …

Much of the problem lies in trying to get in contact with vacant property owners, especially when it's bank-owned, I'm told - whether that's for basic maintenance issues or repeated court summonses. That's the key piece of this ordinance, officials tell me - otherwise, they're dealing with homes vacant as long as four years, with citations piling up and no response in sight.   more ›

Report: Extreme Weather Events More Likely, More Often

Environmental New Jersey is calling for efforts to reduce carbon pollution.

On an interactive map of the United States that records the number of extreme weather events that have taken place over the last several years, New Jersey is the black eye. The red, purples and magentas that color each of New Jersey’s 21 counties make up the wrong end of the weather-related disaster spectrum, marking the entire state as a recurring extreme weather target. Should nothing be done to curb pollution and carbon emissions, a recent report from Environment New Jersey Research and Policy Center details, expect that trend to continue. Just off of the beach in Long Branch Tuesday, with temperatures coincidentally hovering around an unseasonable 80 degrees, several officials gathered to discuss the new report, called “In the Path of …

Saturday Mail Delivery Stays for Now

Citing a Congressional measure, the Board of Governors opts to continue six-day-a-week delivery, not drop to five.

The Board of Governors of the U.S. Postal Service has reversed course and will no longer move ahead with plans to suspend Saturday mail delivery in August to save money, according to a statement from the board. The postal service had announced in February the six-days-per-week mail delivery business model was “no longer sustainable” and that it would eliminate Saturday delivery by Aug. 1. But on Tuesday, the board backpedaled on the decision, citing language in a continuing resolution passed by Congress that prohibited the proposed change. “The Board believes that Congress has left it with no choice but to delay this implementation at this time,” a statement released by the board said. The plan announced in February would have changed …

New NJ SAFE Report Calls for Safe Storage of Guns

The report was produced by a six-member task force.

A report commissioned by Gov. Christie to examine the root causes of gun violence and released Wednesday lists as one of its objective goals to "(P)romote the safe and secure storage of firearms to prevent unauthorized persons from accessing them." Though the report, compiled by NJ SAFE Task Force in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting that claimed 26 lives in Newtown, CT in December, was intended to explore ways to prevent other mass shootings from occurring, it also examines measures that may have prevented the recent accidental shooting death of six-year-old Toms River boy Brandon Holt.  According to the report, New Jersey already has some of the most strident gun laws in the nation, but the six-member bipartisan task force believes it …

They did far less damage than if they had Lanza's arsenal at their disposal. They were clueless kids going for style points with the pressure cookers. They're backup plan was to stay in town and hide in a boat. These weren't the best and brightest. And let's be thankful for that fact.   more ›

'All Options on the Table' to Acquire Woodcrest, Officials Say

Cherry Hill township officials plan to wade into the bidding for the bankrupt country club.

Facing the possibility of a developer swooping in and turning the 155-acre Woodcrest Country Club into a hospital or school or otherwise wiping out what’s one of the largest parcels of open space in the township, Cherry Hill officials Wednesday outlined a plan to enlist county and state help to lodge a bid of their own in the club’s bankruptcy sale next month. With a minimum bid of $6.25 million already set by a judge’s order, and hundreds of thousands in fees on top of that, the township would need to come up with a little more than $6.5 million just to get into the May 20 auction, which requires going out for more help, Mayor Chuck Cahn said. That means calling on Camden County for open space funding, and also going to the state Green …
