Merchantville Crash Kills Cherry Hill Woman, Daughter
Police are weighing charges against one driver in a fatal two-car crash Thursday.
A Cherry Hill woman and her daughter were killed in a head-on crash with an SUV that witnesses said was going four times the speed limit in Merchantville Thursday, police said Friday.
Anada Medina, 36, and her daughter, Stephanie Garcia, 18, were killed when the speeding Dodge Durango smashed into their Honda Odyssey at the traffic circle at the intersection of Chapel and Russell avenues around 3:40 p.m., police said.
Witnesses told police the 31-year-old driver of the Durango, who was not immediately identified, was going up to 100 mph through a section of Chapel Avenue that has a posted speed limit of 25 mph. The driver of the Durango, who was headed north on Chapel, crossed into an oncoming lane of traffic at the circle and crashed into the Honda, police said.
Both the driver of the Durango and an unidentified female passenger are in critical condition at Cooper University Hospital, police said. Investigators from the Merchantville Police Department and the Camden County Prosecutor's Office are reviewing evidence before determining charges against the man, police said.
Garcia was a senior at Cherry Hill West, and principal Joseph Meloche posted a letter to parents Friday on the school's website, expressing condolences for Garcia.
"We have counselors at school to help our students and our staff through this very difficult time," Meloche wrote. "As we move forward, please maintain open communication with your children regarding Stephanie’s death and the feelings they may be experiencing in the grieving process. Please contact the guidance office if you would like us to provide additional information for you about outside grief agencies.
"Thank you for your ongoing support of our children and for keeping Stephanie’s family in your thoughts and prayers."
