East Boys Lacrosse’s First Win Highlights Weekend Sports

The Cougars' baseball team also picked up a victory.

Cherry Hill East’s boys lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-4 lead at halftime and held on, despite not scoring in the fourth quarter, to beat Ocean City for the team’s first win of 2013 Friday.

Led by freshman Ian Sheeky, who had five goals, the Cougars whipped off four goals in the third quarter to take a two-goal lead, then clamped down on defense, allowing only one Ocean City goal in the fourth quarter to escape with the victory.

Brandon Stern (three goals) and Josh Cohen (one) also scored for East.

Clearview 12, Cherry Hill West 3

West got shut out in the first quarter and managed just a goal in each of the following three in a road loss at Clearview Friday.

Rancocas Valley 13, East 6

The Cougars got goals from four different players, but couldn’t keep pace with Rancocas Valley’s offense Saturday.

Ryan Anderson and Brandon Stern (two goals each) led East, while Ian Sheeky and Josh Cohen each tallied a goal.

Baseball

East 9, Clearview 2

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, stretched it to six runs in the fourth and kept the offense going through the end, scoring three in the seventh inning to claim a 9-2 victory over Clearview.

Holy Spirit 2, East 1

Zach Lang allowed just seven hits, but Holy Spirit scratched out two runs in the second inning to claim victory at Millville in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Camden Catholic 14, Pennsauken Tech 2

Dom Messina tripled as the Irish piled up 10 runs in the third inning to earn a mercy-rule victory Saturday.

Vineland 11, Camden Catholic 1

The Irish managed just three hits and had no answer for Vineland’s Johnny Malatesta, who went 4-for-4 with four runs scored in the five-inning, mercy-rule decision.

Softball

Camden Catholic 19, Paul VI 3

Ali Summers tripled and homered for the Irish, who scored eight in the top of the fifth to finish out the mercy-rule victory. Susan Wysocki scattered seven hits in the pitching win.

Winslow Township 2, West 0

It was the definition of a pitcher’s duel—West’s Jamie Robertson racked up nine Ks, but Winslow’s Callia Abbott got 14 strikeouts, as Winslow managed two runs on four hits and two West errors to win.

The Lions’ Chelsea Holiday hit a double, West’s only extra-base hit of the day.

Girls lacrosse

Cherokee 23, West 9

The Lions fell behind in the first half and didn’t have the firepower to recover on the road at Cherokee Friday.

Lauren Anderson led West with 5 goals.

Boys volleyball

East 2, Gloucester County Institute of Technology 0

The Cougars got 10 kills from Nick DiVito and 21 assists from Jake Rudin as they beat GCIT, 25-17, 25-15. Jon Levine added two aces and four blocks in the victory.
