Update: Police Say Toys for Tots Theft Misreported

What looked like a theft was just charity employees picking up gifts, say police.

A pair of would-be Grinches were far from it, due to a miscommunication between charity workers and a local drugstore, Cherry Hill Police said Tuesday morning.

What was initially reported as a theft from the Toys for Tots bins at Walgreens on Route 70 last week turned out to be a completely legitimate pickup by two tired-out charity workers making the last stops of the night, police said.

Two Toys for Tots employees stopped in the drugstore just after 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 to collect donations, but the lead employee told police he forgot to tell Walgreens staff they were there to gather up donations.

After police issued a call for information Monday night about what they initially called suspects in a theft, the charity workers got in touch with police to clear up the situation, and police cancelled the alert.

The Patch should have sent a correction, to its subscribers, as soon as it learned of this information. Who knows what these two people may have suffered.
